Abnormal paps
When a Pap smear is abnormal, your physician may recommend a colposcopy. A colposcopy involves looking at the cervix and vagina with a microscope. During this procedure, biopsies may be taken, which can help your doctor decide what the next right step is for you.
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) can be protected against through Gardasil, a vaccination that protects against the nine most common strains of HPV. Cancer of the cervix, vagina, and vulva has been linked to HPV. HPV may also cause genital warts.
The HPV vaccine consists of three injections over a six-month period, and women ages 9- 45 are encouraged to receive the vaccine. Most commercial insurances provide coverage for the vaccine, but we recommend you contact your insurance with any questions regarding cost and coverage.
